Buying a soccer goal is a bigger decision than most people expect. The right size, frame, and anchor depend entirely on who's using it and where. This guide walks you through every choice using the Kwik Goal lineup we stock and use ourselves.

    The 30-second version:
    • Backyard / small-sided: Project Strikeforce or an Infinity Pop-Up.
    • Club & recreation: Academy or Deluxe European Club.
    • High school (NFHS): Deluxe European Club or Fusion.
    • College & elite (NCAA): Evolution 2.1 or Pro Premier.
    • Don't skip: an anchor system. It's the single most important safety purchase you'll make.

    Quick picks by who's playing

If you already know your situation, start here. Every pick below is in stock and links straight to the product page. The rest of the guide explains how to fine-tune size and frame.

Step 1: Get the size right (this matters most)

Goal size is the number-one decision, and the most common mistake is buying too big for the age group. A regulation goal stands 8 ft tall and 24 ft wide, the size used in high school, college, and the pros. Younger players use smaller goals matched to small-sided formats. Here's how Kwik Goal's standard sizes line up with typical age groups:

Goal size Typical format / age Use case
    8 × 24 11v11 · U13 through adult Regulation: high school, college, club, adult
    7 × 21 9v9 · U11 to U12 Junior regulation step down
    6½ × 18½ 7v7 · U9 to U10 Youth match play
    6½ × 12 Small-sided · U10 Narrow small-sided games
    4½ × 9 4v4 to 5v5 · U8 Young youth / training
    4 × 6 4v4 · U6 to U8 Micro / backyard / shooting reps
Coach's note: Always confirm your league or federation's current rules before buying for organized play. Small-sided formats shift by a year here and there between US Youth Soccer, US Club, and state associations. When in doubt for a club, I tell directors to buy 8×24 for U13+ and 7×21 for U11 to U12, then size down from there. Our Academy and Deluxe European Club lines come in every size in the table above, so you can outfit a whole complex consistently.

Step 2: Match the goal tier to your level of play

Once you know the size, the frame is what separates a $275 backyard goal from a $4,200 competition goal. Heavier, thicker aluminum posts mean more durability, a truer rebound, and, at the top end, official certification. Kwik Goal organizes this into clear tiers:

Competition tier: Evolution & Pro Premier (NCAA + NFHS)

If the goal will host sanctioned college or high school matches, you want a certified competition frame. The Evolution 2.1 uses a reinforced elliptical post built to withstand everything from the high school level to the pros. The Pro Premier goals deliver a true box-style profile seen in international tournaments. These exceed NCAA and NFHS standards and are what you'll find on serious match fields.

Performance tier: Fusion (NCAA + NFHS)

The Fusion is the sweet spot for programs that want certified, all-surface-friendly goals without the top-tier price. It's a 4" aluminum frame that meets NCAA and NFHS standards. There's also the Fusion 120, designed to nest perfectly in front of football uprights. It's the go-to solution for multi-sport stadiums.

Step 3: Permanent, portable, or pop-up?

How you'll move and store the goal is the next decision:

    • Permanent / semi-permanent: Stays on one field. Pair with cemented ground anchors for the most secure setup.
    • Portable with wheels: Many full-size goals offer wheel kits or swivel-wheel versions so two people can reposition them for mowing or multi-use fields.
    • Pop-up: Folds flat for the trunk of your car. Best for coaches running stations and for backyards short on storage.

Also consider surface. On turf or hard courts you'll want an all-surface frame or a weighted base, since you can't drive anchor pegs into the ground.

Step 4: Anchor it, every single time

This is the part people skip, and it's the most important. An unanchored goal can tip, and tip-overs cause serious injuries every year. Whatever goal you buy, budget for an anchor system to match your surface:

Kwik Goal Saddle Anchor Bag for soccer goals
    Any surface

Fill with sand and drape over the goal base. Works on grass, turf, or hard court.

Other options we stock include portable anchor pegs and auger anchors for natural grass, and box anchors or cemented ground anchors for permanent installs. Match the anchor to your surface, and never let kids hang on the crossbar.

How to choose, in three questions

    1. Who's playing? Age and format set your size (see the chart above).
    2. What level? Sanctioned play needs NCAA/NFHS certification; club, rec, and backyard don't.
    3. Where will it live? Fixed field, multi-use field, or trunk of the car: that picks permanent, portable, or pop-up.

Answer those three and the right Kwik Goal almost always picks itself. Still unsure? We've been outfitting teams since 2001, so reach out and we'll spec it with you.

    Frequently asked questions

What size soccer goal do I need?

A regulation goal is 8 ft tall by 24 ft wide and is used for 11v11 play from roughly U13 through adult. Younger age groups use smaller goals: about 7×21 for 9v9 (U11 to U12), 6½×18½ for 7v7 (U9 to U10), and 4×6 or 4½×9 for the youngest small-sided formats. Always confirm your league's current rules before buying for organized play.

What's the difference between Kwik Goal's Evolution, Pro Premier, Fusion, Deluxe European Club, and Academy lines?

They're tiers of durability and certification. Evolution and Pro Premier are competition goals that exceed NCAA and NFHS standards. Fusion is a certified value option (also NCAA/NFHS). Deluxe European Club meets NFHS standards and is popular for high school and club. Academy is built for club and recreational play. Backyard lines like Project Strikeforce and the Infinity Pop-Ups prioritize portability over certification.

Are Kwik Goal soccer goals NCAA and NFHS approved?

The competition and performance lines are. Evolution, Pro Premier, and Fusion (including Fusion 120) exceed NCAA and NFHS standards, and the Deluxe European Club meets NFHS standards. Recreational and backyard goals are not intended for sanctioned match play. Each product page lists the certifications for that model.

How do I anchor a soccer goal safely?

Never use a goal without an anchor. On grass you can use anchor pegs or auger anchors; on turf and hard courts use sand-filled anchor bags or a weighted-base goal; for permanent fields, cemented ground anchors or box anchors give the most secure hold. Tip-overs cause serious injuries, so anchor every goal and never let players hang on the crossbar.

What's the best soccer goal for a backyard?

For most families, the Project Strikeforce 4×6 is the durable, weatherproof choice for daily shooting practice. If you need something that folds away, a weighted Infinity Pop-Up sets up in seconds and stores flat.

Should I buy a permanent or portable goal?

Choose permanent (with cemented anchors) if the goal stays on one dedicated field. Choose portable (wheel kits, swivel wheels, or pop-ups) if you share the field with other sports, need to move goals for mowing, or want to transport them between sites.
