Mexico World Cup 2026: Group A Fixtures, Squad & Preview

    World Cup 2026 · Group A · Host Nation

    Mexico at the 2026
    World CupEl Tri Comes Home

For the first time since 1986, the World Cup belongs to Mexico, and El Tri don't just play in it, they start it. On Thursday, June 11, Mexico kicks off the entire 2026 FIFA World Cup against South Africa at the legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. It's the very first match of the first World Cup ever to feature 48 teams. Home soil, a roaring Azteca, and a nation that has waited 40 years for another deep run. Here's everything you need to know before the whistle blows, plus the official Mexico gear to wear while you watch.

The Stage: Three Games at Home

Mexico is the only country ever to host three World Cups: 1970, 1986, and now 2026. Javier "Vasco" Aguirre's side will play all three group matches at home, two at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City and one at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara. The altitude, the climate, and one of the most passionate fanbases on earth combine into a genuine edge. In Aguirre's words, home advantage is "priceless."

History backs that up. At the Azteca across two previous World Cups, Mexico has never lost, posting five wins and two draws. Both of Mexico's only quarterfinal appearances came as hosts, in 1970 and 1986. The mission in 2026 is simple to say and hard to do: break the "quinto partido" curse and finally reach a fifth match.

The streak everyone's talking about. Mexico reached the Round of 16 in eight straight World Cups from 1994 to 2018, but has never broken through to a quarterfinal in a tournament held abroad, and crashed out in the group stage in 2022. A first quarterfinal in 40 years, at home, is the dream.

    Group A: Who Mexico Faces

The December draw placed Mexico in Group A alongside South Africa, South Korea, and Czechia. As group favorites, El Tri will expect to advance, but Czechia's size and South Korea's tempo are real tests, and South Africa, Mexico's opponent in the famous 2010 opener, would love a repeat upset bid. The top two from each group advance to the new Round of 32, joined by the eight best third place finishers across a field of 48 nations.

    Players to Watch

Aguirre named a 26 player squad built around a strong Liga MX core and a handful of leaders based in Europe. These are the names that will define Mexico's tournament:

    Captain · Midfield

    Edson Álvarez

The spine of the team. Álvarez anchors midfield, breaks up attacks, and sets the tempo. His fitness across a long tournament is Mexico's most important variable.

    Forward

    Raúl Jiménez

A home World Cup for the veteran No. 9, who arrives off a strong Premier League season with Fulham and 44 international goals, among the most in Mexican history.

    Forward

    Santiago Giménez

At 24, "Santi" is Mexico's sharpest finisher. His movement in the box and finishing with either foot make him the striker opposing defenders must track first.

    Midfield · Wonderkid

    Gilberto Mora

Just 17 and the youngest player in the squad, one of the youngest at the entire tournament. His energy and creativity could be the spark that unlocks tight games.

    Goalkeeper · Legend

    Guillermo Ochoa

At 40, "Memo" is set to become only the third man ever, alongside Messi and Ronaldo, to appear at six World Cups. Almost certainly his farewell.

    Manager

    Javier Aguirre

"El Vasco" leads Mexico at his third World Cup as head coach, armed with consecutive CONCACAF titles and a belief that home advantage changes everything.

The headline omission: winger Hirving "Chucky" Lozano, left out after limited minutes and disciplinary questions. It's one of the bigger stories of Mexico's buildup.

Can El Tri Finally Break Through?

Realistically, Mexico should win Group A or finish a strong second, setting up a Round of 32 tie that, if results fall right, could land in Los Angeles or Houston, two of the most heavily Mexican cities in North America. The talent is there. The crowd is there. The question is whether this group can do what no Mexican side has done since 1986: win that elusive fifth game. With the Azteca behind them, there may never be a better chance.
